Choosing Suitor is a comprehensive publication of photographs taken by American artist SoiL Thornton on streets around the world with their cell phone between 2015 and 2023, published to accompany an exhibition of the same name at Secession in Vienna. Born from the artist’s fascination with sexuality and identity politics, the subjects in the book are anonymised by the use of colour blotches over their faces, while codes for gender identities and sexualities from the LGBT Flags Merge! game app are included underneath each photo. Designed to educate people about different gender identities and sexualities across the entire LGBTQIA+ spectrum, the app contains a multitude of terms, like “intersex, twink, multi-sexual, ningender, asexual” and much more – all of which are included in the book.
