Published on the occasion of Mariko Mori’s 1998 exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery, London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, this fully illustrated catalogue was the first English language publication devoted to the Tokyo-born artist, surveying what was at the time the largest presentation of Mori’s work in Britain to date. As she shape-shifts through numerous whimsical characters in various settings–from a subway riding cyborg to a futuristic office girl serving tea on the streets of Tokyo–Mori’s self transformations investigate the cultural construction of identity, juxtaposing traditional Eastern spirituality, Western pop culture and the technological advances that are essential to the economy of her home country.
