The exhibition catalogue for Mariko Mori’s 1999 Esoteric Cosmos show at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany. Known for her futuristic self-portraits that explore themes of spirituality, sci-fi, technology and the juxtaposition of Eastern mythology with Western culture, the Tokyo-born artist’s fantastical images of wind farms, rocky canyons and underground caves are compiled here. Mori worked as a fashion model in the late 1980s, and this influence can be felt in her early works, where she transforms herself into an exotic, alien creature against everyday backdrops.
