In 1994, Art Tower Mito, Contemporary Art Center hosted Jenny Holzer’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan. It was at this exhibition where several of her artworks, such as the award-winning LED board installation she presented in 1990 as the first woman to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale, appeared with Japanese text for the first time. In the Forest of the Words, published on this occasion, surveys Holzer’s career, presenting full colour and black and white illustrations of artworks including her confronting Truisms and Inflammatory Essays, alongside page spreads of her texts mirrored with their Japanese translations.
