A rare Japanese monograph of Cindy Sherman’s work from 1987 featuring photographs from the Untitled Film Stills series, where the artist posed as generic female film characters, and the darkly humorous, grotesque Fairy Tales series. “A lot of it (the work) is a reaction to growing up bombarded by stereotypes of what a woman is supposed to look and act like – beauty and civilized ways of behaviour,” says Sherman in an interview with fellow American artist Laurie Simmons. “I preferred anything that was different from that – going against what the fashion magazines said.” The cover image is from Sherman’s Pink Robes series (Untitled #97 from 1982).
