Photographs is a comprehensive collection of J.D ‘Okhai Ojeikere’s celebrated documentary series Hair Styles, a diarising project he embarked on in 1968 after joining the Nigerian Arts Council in 1967. Capturing over a thousand images of various everyday and ceremonial African hairstyles, Ojeikere travelled through Nigeria and photographed his models candidly using black and white film in numerous settings, resulting in an anthropological curation of Nigerian culture. Considered a pinnacle within Ojeikere’s extensive career, Photographs includes a foreword from curator André Magnin, who specialises in researching contemporary and emerging art from non-western cultures.
