In Gay Betrayals, artist duo Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings present a narrative of everyday (homo)sociality through a series of drawings, preparatory sketches and egg tempera paintings, where statuesque figures are caught as they feel the outlines of existing power structures, try out new strategies of inclusivity and, ultimately, wrestle with the blurred lineaments of identity and community. This edition reproduces American academic Leo Bersani’s 1997 text of the same name, where Bersani critiques queer assimilative tendencies into a culture some might consider damaging, and whose perspective Quinlan and Hastings revisit–alongside wider research into the politics of queer spaces–within the works published in this book.
