Somaya Critchlow
Afternoon’s Darkness
1st Edition, 2023
Maximillian William
£55
This is as much a book as it is an art object. Published in autumn 2023, following Critchlow’s namesake exhibition at Maximilian William gallery in London, it comes delicately wrapped in a cardboard casing. Alongside an essay by Alison Gingeras and an interview between Critchlow and the writer Katherine Angel, Afternoon’s Darkness features reproductions of all the artworks featured in the exhibition, plus original photography of stained glass windows and dramatic rural landscapes. There are also paintings of nude women, some covered in swathes of cloth, others kneeling down to paint, as inspired by the work of Edvard Munch, David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Goya’s Disasters of War prints.
