Described by the magazine’s founder Robert Ford as a “black gay and lesbian underground arts journal”, THING ran from 1989 to 1993, and quickly became an important cultural touchstone for queer Black musicians and artists. All ten issues of the magazine are compiled and presented together for the first time in this book, with editions featuring diverse forms of media including art, fiction, poetry, gossip, and polemics from individuals including Deee-Lite, Lyle Ashton Harris, Gary Indiana, and David Wojnarowicz, whilst reflecting the social backdrop of financial crises and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Independent and community-driven, THING’s mission was best portrayed by its tagline; “She Knows Who She Is”.
