This book documents the experiences of Japanese photographer Mao Ishikawa, an influential photographer of fringe society, in 1970s Okinawa. In 1975, Ishikawa moved to the island of Okinawa where the US military held bases, to work in bars and photograph Black American soldiers. Having “boyfriend after boyfriend”, Ishikawa eventually became more interested in the bar girls, photographing their “open and free” lifestyles amidst “narrow, cramped Okinawa”. The photos were originally published in the 1982 book Hot Days in Camp Hansen, which was banned in Japan following complaints from the women photographed.
