Pastime Paradise
1st Edition, 2000
MADRA Publishing
£120
Born in Tokyo in 1973, alongside photographers like Hiromix and Mika Ninagawa, Yurie Nagashima is one of the key figures responsible for ushering in the ‘girly photo’ movement of the 1990s in Japan. Nagashima’s photographs offered what was a unique perspective at the time in photography, that of a young woman. Parallel to cultural shifts within Japan, her and her peers’ photographs, characterised by their honest, point-and-shoot visual style, created a boom in women documenting and representing their own lives this way. Pastime Paradise gathers many of the photographer’s early career images of herself, friends and family in the 90s in Japan and whilst studying abroad in the United States, with cameos from Nobuyoshi Araki and Nan Goldin.
